Information about the child you played with

Date of birth child is 4 yrs old

Sex: __ Male _X_Female

Child's ID number: 2003

Describe the mood of the child when you began to work with him or her:

The child was happy but causious and shy. She was a little difficult to warm up but did at least attempt the activity the second time through.

Please describe the physical conditions that apply to your child today.

Overall the child was fine, however we did have some trouble concentrating once her mother came to watch.

How did you begin this activity?

I began the activity by telling the child that we were going to have a great time playing on the computer. I assured her that it would be fun and that I also never used the kidpix program before so I would need her help. She started to lose some of her shyness when I told her that.

What was your opening line?

My opening line was: "Today we are going to have a lot of fun making pictures."

Did the child use the mouse and keyboard to draw her or his own picture today or did you work the computer on behalf of the child. Describe precisely who did what?

The child used the mouse to make her own pictures. I did guide her verbally to the different kidpix utilities for drawing and stamps. After she drew the picture we changed seats and I typed out her story.

What features of the program did the child use?

The child only used the stamps. This was her first time using kidpix.

Describe what happened as the child made the picture.

The child made the picture in silence. At certain times I did attempt to strike a conversation on what she was thinking and that did work for a short amount of time.

Describe the picture that your child made

The picture that my child made consisted mainly of fantasy animals. The animals that she picked were brightly colored, spread out all over thepaper. She also tended to put the same animals in groups rather than anywhere on the page.

Describe how the child went about telling you the story.

The child could not create a story with the first picture that she had done. I tried to coax her a few times and she made it clear she could not think of anything.

Next, you, the leader try to help the child make some connection between the story and the picture.

1.Describe what happened as the child made the picture.

As the child made the picture, she developed a "Christmas theme", telling me what she likes about Christmas and about her friend who she will give a present to next year.

2.Describe how the child went about telling the story

The child needed a lot of coaxing to help with the story. She told the story line by line, stopping at the end of each sentence waiting for more help from myself. At one point she did develop some sort of flow lasting only two sentences.

3.Discuss your follow-up of the story in terms of the way the child or you connected the picture and the story to each other or to the child's previous experince(s).

The child could not connect her earlier picture to the later picture and story. I did attempt to show her that in her earlier picture she had "flying dogs" and now she was talking about "flying reindeer" but that did not amount to anything. My overall thoughts of this experience is that first it was her first time using kidpix and it was somewhat proven (after my example) that she picked up the idea. With experience, she will develop the task better.
