Description:
This workshop will introduce teachers to the basic functions of Geometer's Sketchpad. We will explore how to create complex geometrical figures as well as how to animate them - this capability makes Geometer's Sketchpad a powerful visualization tool. Although it is mainly used in the teaching of Geometry, it can also be used in the context of Algebra, Precalculus, Trigonometry, and Calculus classes. We will work through sample classroom activities that illustrate the many ways this tool can be incorporated in the teaching of mathematics at various grade levels.

Objectives:
  • Become acquainted with the basic functions of Geometer's Sketchpad
  • Explore ways of incorporating Geometer's Sketchpad in the teaching of mathematics that encourage meaning making and higher-order thinking in students
  • Work through sample classroom activities using Geometer's Sketchpad (both middle and high school level)
  • Work in collaboration with teachers of similar grade levels to create Geometer's Sketchpad activities

  • Benefits:
  • 5 professional development hours
  • Free eBoard for one year (www.eBoard.com)
  • Teachers will receive a CD containing a demo version of Geometer's Sketchpad
  • Handouts containing sample classroom activities will be distributed
