Fractions and solving word problems are two of the most common areas that students struggle with. How can we build on knowledge about whole numbers to motivate the traditional definitions for operations with fractions? How do we differentiate between multiplication and division fraction problems? What are some common pitfalls when solving fraction word problems, and how to avoid them? In this workshop, we will explore how a problem solving context can help introduce new material about fractions, while also strengthening the students’ problem solving skills.
