Our goal is to keep our students and staff safe in our academic settings with minimal impact on our learning environments. Li-ion batteries are a new safety concern emerging in society and will become an issue in our schools. While Li-ion batteries allow more students to explore phenomena in a hands-on, inquiry-based environment, they can be extremely dangerous if used, stored, maintained, or disposed of incorrectly.

This presentation will go over why Li-ion batteries provide greater learning opportunities to students, the safety issues with using Li-ion batteries, how to train your staff and students to utilize the technology properly, and to develop the protocols needed to keep everyone safe and informed if a Li-ion battery were to malfunction. Participants will work in teams to develop protocols for the safe use, storage, maintenance, and disposal of Li-ion batteries in their schools, how to identify dangers, and how to start the discussion about Li-ion safety with their schools, school boards, fire marshalls, and community. Numerous resources will be shared so that the participants can inform their stakeholders.
