The Rutgers Youth Enjoy Science (RUYES) program at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey is an educational opportunity for underrepresented minority undergraduate and high school students to engage in cutting-edge cancer research, curriculum support, and professional development activities. Science teachers from high schools with significant proportions of students from underrepresented backgrounds will also have the opportunity to engage in basic, clinical, or population-based cancer research through the program. RUYES seeks to increase the diversity of the biomedical, cancer research workforce in order to reduce cancer disparities in both New Jersey and across the United States. Participants will engage in program related activities for three months per year for two years.

The RUYES program is generously funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute grant 1R25CA247785. Sunita Chaudhary, PhD, Director of Research Education at Cancer Institute of New Jersey, is the Principal Investigator of this grant. Co-investigators on the grant include other Rutgers University faculty: Renee Edwards, PhD; Patricia Irizarry, PhD; Rita Musanti, PhD, ANP-BC; Laura E. Liang, DrPH, CHES, CPH; and David Shernoff, PhD.  An Advisory Committee including members selected for their backgrounds and experience in high school and undergraduate education, cancer disparities, community outreach and/or diversity initiatives support the RUYES program.
