Beginning Fall 2018

A joint venture with Center for Mathematics, Science and Computer Education (CMSCE) and Game Research and Immersive Design (GRID)

to help you keep up with today's educational technological demands

Check our Workshops page to register or  for the latest schedule.

We are pleased to announce our new series within the Maker series to help with the new New Jersey Computer Science requirements. Our courses are geared towards upper Middle School and High School teachers but all are welcome.

Teachers will have the option of taking workshops individually or either of the 4-day intensive training camps on machine learning or set up their own autonomous vehicle lab,

High school students will have an opportunity to take one of our 5-day summer camps to explore machine learning and its various applications or build their own autonomous r/c vehicle. Middle school students who wish to register must submit a letter of recommendation from their teacher/instructor vouching for their high interest and capabilities.

One Day Workshop Series

  • Autobotz: Introduction to Autonomous Vehicles
This workshop is an overview of machine learning and digital fabrication techniques involved with modifying an off the shelf R/C car to drive autonomously. Participants will have an opportunity to "teach" the cars and see how effectively they "learn"

  • Computer Vision Kit : Introduction to Machine Learning
Explore how computers see and understand what they see while we play with computer vision. Participants will build and setup their own custom vision kit. It's a great starting point to learn and work with Computer Vision and Machine Learning on the Raspberry PI 3 B+. Participants will keep their completed projects at the end of the workshop.

  • Python and Machine Learning

This workshop focuses on more in-depth Python coding for machine learning with online tools such as Jupyter Notebook/Collaboratory.  Participants will also learn to navigate and leverage the online tools within their classroom. Previous attendee experience with Raspberry PI environment and Python is helpful but not required.  Recommended Pre-requisite(s) (not required): PI 101: Introduction to Raspberry PI,  PI 102: Command Line, Python and Web Serving

  • Machine Learning Math

Participants will take a more in-depth look at the math underlying machine learning.  This workshop will focus primarily on high school level statistics.

  • Introduction to Source Control
Using Python, attendees will learn what is source control, basic practices and how to utilizing online source control tools. revious attendee experience with Raspberry PI environment and Python is helpful but not required.  Recommended Pre-requisite(s) (not required): PI 101: Introduction to Raspberry PI,  PI 102: Command Line, Python and Web Serving
  • Computer Photography: OpenCV

This workshop will take a in-depth look at computer vision outside of machine learning, specifically OpenCV. OpenCV is open source library geared towards enabling real-time computer vision functionality. Participants will learn to navigate and leverage OpenCV to other vision projects that utilize a Raspberry PI and Camera.  Previous attendee experience with Raspberry PI environment and Python is helpful but not required.  Recommended Pre-requisite(s) (not required): PI 101: Introduction to Raspberry PI,  PI 102: Command Line, Python and Web Serving , PI 103: Python and PI Camera

Related Workshops from Raspberry PI Training  Series
(Hardware behind the AI projects)

  • PI 101: Introduction to Raspberry PI

In this hands-on introduction to using Raspberry Pi, you will learn how to get started with the Pi, some creative ways to use it in your classroom, and where to find more info for taking it to the next level. Bonus: How to remotely access the Raspberry Pi from your computer or smartphone.

  • PI 102: Command Line, Python and Web Serving

This workshop will help participants leverage the Raspberry PI as a web server for various projects in their classroom.  Attendees will learn how to navigate the Command Line and get an introductory exposure to Python in action.

  • PI 103: Python and PI Camera

The focus of this workshop centers around the basics of working with the PI Camera.  Participants will learn how to setup the camera with Raspberry PI 3 B+ and how to operate it.  We will by working with Python to create simple projects/tasks -- No previous Python experience necessary.

4 Day Intensive Teacher Training Camps

  • AI Teacher Maker Camp:  Introduction to Machine Learning (Middle & High School Teachers)

This teacher training program geared towards middle to high school levels. The camp will cover the basics of machine learning and its applications, Python programming, source control as well as classroom management tools.

  • AI Teacher Maker Camp: Starting Your Own Autonomous Vehicle Lab (Middle & High School Teachers)

Participants will be able to develop their own autonomous vehicle lab by modifying off the shelf r/c vehicles.  This intensive program will focus on the physical builds and machine learning as well as material and classroom logistics.  Each participant have an  r/c autonomous car to take back to their classroom.

5 Day Summer High School Student Camps

  • AI Autonomous R/C Maker Student Camp

Students will convert an r/c car into an autonomous vehicle using fabrication tools at the Makerspace.  They will be exposed to Python programming, computer vision and machine learning. Students will train their cars to perform a series of different tracks and obstacles. Each participant will keep their R/C build at the end of this camp.

  •  AI Machine Learning Student Camp

Students will build, program train a computer vision apparatus for machine learning.  The participants will be exposed to Python programming, source control and different machine learning neural network projects from learning to identify people, expressions and more.
